Handmade Byzantine Icon of Forty Holy Martyrs.
The Forty Holy Martyrs were Roman soldiers in the order of Licinius, who martyred for their Christian faith.
During the persecution of the Christians they were arrested by the prefect of Sebaste, tortured and forced to immerse themselves for a whole night in the cold waters of Lake Sebaste. When one of them fainted, the jailer Aglaius went to his place, who seeing their martyrdom believed in Jesus Christ.
The next day, after their refusal to sacrifice to the idols, they were burned at the stake and their bodies were thrown into the lake. The Christians who saw the horrible event collected the dead from the water, buried them and prayed for them.
The Forty Holy Martyrs are patrons of the Xeropotamou Monastery of Mount Athos.
