Reliquaries

The Relic Case is a small box or container for relics. These may be the supposed or actual natural remains of saints, such as bones, clothing, or an object associated with saints or other religious figures. Relics were an important form of artistic production throughout Europe and Byzantium during the Middle Ages.

They were usually vessels made or covered with gold, silver, precious stones and enamel, decorated with relief images.

They were designed with portability in mind as they are often displayed to the public or transported in a procession on the feast day of the saint or used to inaugurate and sanctify temples and sacred relics.
