Reliquaries are small boxes or container for relics. These may be the supposed or actual natural remains of saints, such as bones, clothing, or an object associated with saints or other religious figures. Reliquaries were an important form of artistic production throughout Europe and Byzantium in the Middle Ages.

They were designed with portability in mind as they are often displayed to the public or transported in a procession on the feast day of the saint or used to inaugurate and sanctify temples and antimensia.
