Silk Printed Icons

Silk printed icons represent an almost unknown aspect of the Orthodox iconography, as they have a parallel development with the wall-paintings and the portable icons. The beginning of the Orthodox print-making is estimated in the 17th century. The prints were made to be circulated in the Orthodox communities of the areas under the Ottoman dominion. They represent holy figures, religious scenes and panoramic views of monasteries and churches with the patron Saints and scenes of the Saints’ lives. On the prints there are inscriptions that mention the names of their creators; these sometimes are identified with their print-makers (stampadourous), or some others with their sponsors. One plate used to produce thousand of replica prints; these were produced on paper, or on silk. The prints were distributed to the pilgrims on the Holy celebrations of the monasteries and churches in picture, which, in this way, became widely known. 

Father «Pefkis», qualified hagiographer of the Athoniados Ecclesiastical Academy in Agion Oros on the famous Mount Athos, created unique icons, accurate reproductions of the strict Byzantine Style (Cretan School - Theophanis) with real traditional colors and gold leaf on canvas and aged wood.
