It belongs to the iconographic type of the Virgin of Mercy ( Eleoussa ) characterized by the melancholic and serious countenance of the Virgin. She holds tenderly the child Jesus who is embracing her. The painting is in egg tempera on wood and is found in the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow.
