Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Modestus, Archbishop of Jerusalem.
Saint Modestus was born in Sebasteia in Cappadocia and was brought up with a Christian education. He followed a monastic life on Mount Sinai and was ordained abbot of the Monastery of Saint Theodosius in Palestine.
When the Persian army attacked Syria and Palestine destroying temples and capturing Christians, Saint Modestus was temporarily appointed to rule the Church of Jerusalem.
With the help of Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, Saint Modestus restored the destroyed churches and buried all the Christians who were murdered.
He passed away peacefully at an old age.
Troparion of Saint Modestus
