Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Maximus the Confessor.
Saint Maximus the Confessor was born in 580 AD in Constantinople and received a great religious education. He began his monastic life from the Monastery of Chrysoupoleos in Constantinople and quickly became identified with the struggle against the heretical Monothelitism, which angered the Emperor Constans.
After an illegitimate council convened by the Emperor, Saint Maximus the Confessor was sentenced to have his tongue and right hand mutilated. This torture led to his death in 662 AD.
His written work remains to this day an important source of ascetic teaching and is studied by priests and monks.
