Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Cosmas of Aitolia.
Saint Cosmas was born in 1714 in a village of Aitolia and received a religious upbringing. In his twenties, he received the necessary further education at the school of the Monastery of Vatopedi.
After Mount Athos and with the will to pass on his knowledge to the people, who were suffering under the Turkish yoke, he learned from his brother, Chrysanthos, the art of rhetoric and traveled throughout Greece to teach the Word of God .
Dozens of churches and schools were built with his help, but many turned against him, which led to his death by hanging in Kolikotasi, Northern Epirus in 1779.
He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1961.
Apolytikion of Cosmas of Aitolia
With odes let us acclaim the renowned Cosmas, who gloriously excelled among the choirs of the martyrs, priest, and ascetics, and let gather in praise of his memory; for he dispenseth healing to them that have recourse to him with faith, since, as an equal of the Apostles, he hath boldness before Christ.
